How Oxley BC attracted 20 new players

July 17, 2025

In an impressive achievement, the Oxley Bridge Group in Walcha has shown that even small clubs can attract beginners.

Despite having just 26 playing members, the Oxley Bridge Group recruited 20 learners into its beginner course at the start of the year. Every one of those participants was a local and completed the seven-week program.

How did they do it?

The recruitment effort was driven by club President Sue White. She received strong support from club members and the broader Walcha community. Posters went up in key locations around town. Ads ran in the local free paper. And club members spread the word among friends, family, and just about everyone they met. Personal phone calls to potential players were followed up with warm encouragement and a welcoming tone. It was a true whole-of-club campaign.

A key factor in the course’s appeal was the timing: Monday evenings, 6–9pm. The slot was chosen to suit working locals and turned out to be ideal. Among the new players were retirees, local graziers and their partners, business owners, the town GP, and a younger local police officer.

Participants appreciated the club’s relaxed, friendly atmosphere and the little touches that made each session feel special. The use of the club bar, along with a regular spread of homemade cakes and snacks gave the nights a local flavour. There was even talk of exchanging recipes!

Leveraging support

To help them, the Oxley Bridge Group reached out to the nearby Armidale Bridge Club for support. The Armidale club supplied a flyer template and some lessons were presented by Armidale’s Glenda Parmenter. Oxley’s own Janie Fenwicke led later sessions and supervised play.

Oxley’s committee has reviewed Bridge NSW lesson and teaching materials. They are now being used to support follow-up supervised play.

Clubs wanting to replicate Oxley’s success can contact Bridge NSW’s Chair of the Education Committee Steve English (education@bridgensw.com.au) for advice and resources.

What’s next for Oxley’s beginners?

For beginners, supported play sessions continue on Monday nights at 6:30pm at the club. The majority of them preferred to continue with Mondays as opposed to Friday nights.

Those not working full time hope to attend Monday morning sessions at the Tennis Club, before moving to Tuesday matches.

The Oxley Bridge Group’s achievement is proof that it’s  possible to grow a bridge club in a small town with some enthusiasm, collaboration, and a genuine sense of fun.
